The greatest tourist attractions of Cambodia are the temples. The majority of them were built between the 9th and 13th centuries to glorify a succession of Khmer kings. Western Cambodia is famous for Angkor Wat, which is the biggest and the most popular sight. It is a city that became a pagoda. Nowadays Angkor Wat is the single largest religious monument in the world. Thanks to its historical beauty it is usually called the masterpiece of an unknown Michelangelo. The walls of Angkor Wat are encircled by a beautiful moat. Angkor Thom (which means Great City) is one of the largest of all ancient Khmer cities. It was a former state capital of Jayavarman VII and nowadays it is full of numerous sights. The tallest of the monuments at Angkor is Baphuon. In 1960 it was restored according to some photoes. If you want to deep in the life of the Khmer god-kings, visit Phimeanakas (described as a Tower of Gold). Despite its largely ruined state, the royal palace remains a fascinating area to walk through.
Southern Cambodia offers the tourists unspoiled islands and pleasant rural sceneries. Sihanoukville is the country's only deep water port, that’s why it is extremely popular with the tourists, who prefer to stay in the quaint beach side guesthouses rather then in noisy city. Tourism and gambling are the big moneyspinners in Sihanoukville. The visitors are rather rare event in the Northeastern Cambodia. It contains some of the most remote yet remarkable areas in the country. Do not waste time and see the Mekong riverside towns of Kratie and Stung Treng. Rural north eastern town of Kratie is famous for its river dolphins, which are on the edge of the extinction. The viewers can get near enough to see the dolphins’ smiles. Be sure that Cambodia will take your breath away.
